Remodeling - Goodbye Kitchen Soffit!

The kitchen soffitt was one of my least favorite parts of our kitchen, and is was the one thing that I just couldn't get past since we wanted to update the look but were leaving it in place.

So...I knocked a big hole in it with a hammer when Chance was in the other room...

Before

Taking down the crooked piece of drywall above the sink.

There was a light above the sink attached to a single sheet of drywall, and when we took it down, we found that the inside was melted and could have caught on fire at any minute.  Thank goodness we got rid of it!!

Prying it off with a crowbar

I started by prying all of the drywall off with a crowbar, and was able to get it all cleanly off without messing up the ceiling.  The big mystery with taking the soffitt down was what we could find behind it.  We had a range of issues we might uncover - unfinished drywall...a hole that opened up to the attic...who knew!

Turns out, we found a best case scenario for the first project of the entire house!  There was drywall behind it and at the top!  YAY!  Now all I had to do was remove the wood frame that held the drywall.

It was hard - and Chance had to come and take down the last two boards because I just wasn't strong enough.  He only knocked two holes in the wall...

With the lights installed...it's going to be so neat when we're done!

The next phase is to have the drywall repaired and patched on the ceiling and on the wall behind the cabinets.  We can then finish painting the cabinets and get this never-ending kitchen project on the move!

Whew...pray for us...we're going to need it!
