We've known our walls in the upstairs were trouble from the time we started remodeling, but we didn't know the full extent of the trouble until we had a Drywall Contractor come over recently.
Apparently, we have walls that were wallpapered from day 1...in 1977...and then painted over or improperly removed. All of this combined with layers and layers of paint equals a huge mess. We started realizing something was wrong with our walls when we pulled down trim in one of the guest bedrooms. The paint just peeled off like wallpaper...literally peeled off in sheets!
It took us a little while to make our decision - asking friends and family, asking our Real Estate agent, looking at different people's houses - and we ultimately decided to have all of our interior walls textured with a knockdown texture. This is the same texture we had done on our ceilings before we moved in (when we scraped off the popcorn!) and we love it. We had to face the fact that our walls would never be pretty and smooth in this house, plus, the texturing is more forgiving and hides blemishes better than smooth walls - which we need!
The process began with priming all of our walls in the house - which took a couple of weekend days and week nights. Then the drywall contractor (from here on out, referred to as Jeremy), came and started patching holes from our lighting adventure - which you can read about HERE.
After the patching was finished, he started texturing the walls. Now, if you haven't ever seen drywall guys work, it is MESSY! Everything in our house has been covered in plastic for weeks - partly because Jeremy has had some machine and personal issues, and the job's been delayed - but also because it's a time consuming process and doesn't happen in one day.
This is from a different project (the never ending rotten floor repair) but you can see the plastic over everything in the background.
Since our walls were such a mess, Jeremy had to use a different technique to apply the knockdown texture. He sprayed on the texture, let it dry, and then used a huge power sander to "knock it down". This resulted in more dust and mess than you can imagine - it looked like someone shook a bag of flour throughout our entire house.
Even Gus got used to the plastic, haha!
We just started painting the walls this past weekend and they are turning out beautifully. Turns out all of the mess, dust and hassle was worth it. Since all of the walls are primed white, it's kind of hard to see the texture. I'll post pictures of the painted walls once we get them done. Can't wait!
